The politician's detention has sparked mass protests in Turkey.
Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has been arrested on charges of corruption and aiding a terrorist organization, following a court ruling.
NTV Habber reported this.
The court session took place on Sunday, March 23. In the morning, İmamoğlu testified, with his interrogation lasting about two hours. A total of 89 suspects are involved in the case. Prosecutors had requested that the court order their detention.
The court ruled that the Istanbul mayor should be taken into custody while the pretrial investigation continues.
Protests in Turkey
It should be noted that on March 19, Turkish authorities detained İmamoğlu, who is considered the main political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
İmamoğlu is accused of corruption and assisting the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is classified as a terrorist organization in Turkey. The Istanbul mayor denies all allegations.
His arrest triggered a wave of large-scale protests in Istanbul, Ankara, and other Turkish cities. In the past 24 hours, more than 300 people have been detained during the demonstrations. Authorities have warned that they "will not tolerate chaos and provocations."
Additionally, the social network X (former Twitter) has blocked the accounts of users who were spreading information about the protests.
