This Choice Is To Remain In History
VLADISLAV INOZEMTSEV

On Russia's most consistent dissident.

Today I cannot but express my sincere support and warmest sympathies to a man whom Putin's clique has virtually condemned to death. Aleksandr Skobov, a legendary 67-year-old dissident, an opponent of all violence, an enemy of tyranny and a freedom fighter persecuted by the authorities back in Soviet times, has been sentenced by a military ‘court’ in St. Petersburg to 16 years of prison and a penal colony solely for his thoughts and words about the criminal war the Kremlin has been waging in Ukraine for the past four years. Aleksandr can hardly even be called a political prisoner: unlike many of those persecuted by the regime in recent years for trying to organise protests, create parties or - that's horrible! - participate in elections, he has used only the power of the word, and is therefore a classic prisoner of conscience. His word was also resounding in his speeches in court, to one of which I cannot help but refer, and which look like landmark documents from the most heinous era of Russian history.

I admire the willpower of Aleksandr Skobov, who stayed in Russia despite the obvious realisation of what was awaiting him. His loyalty - to his principles, to his homeland, to his wife, who is now a witness in the case fabricated against him. His eloquence and persuasiveness, unrivalled, but, of course, in no way touching the ‘judges’, who have long lost their humanity in obedient service to the system.

Aleksandr Skobov has made his choice. No matter how his future fate turns out, this choice will remain in history. The history of that Russia, which will be written by those who will impartially put everyone in their place. I would like to believe that this will happen during the lifetime of the most consistent dissident of our time.....
