The journalist spoke about how his opinion of the Belarusian dictator has changed.
In a 2020 interview with Ukrainian journalist Dmitry Gordon, Aliaksandr Lukashenka promised that Russian troops would never attack Ukraine from Belarusian territory. However, this happened just two years later. Lukashenka was once the most popular foreign politician in Ukraine, but now he is despised, Gordon said on Belsat.
Many considered that interview to be complimentary and legitimizing for Lukashenko.
According to Gordon, he did not expect such repression after the elections and the protests that followed:
"I did not expect what he would do to the opposition when mass protests erupted after his fraudulent election in 2020. Eight or nine days after my visit to Minsk, I condemned Lukashenka, addressed the Belarusians, and called him nothing but a scoundrel, because only a scoundrel could treat his own people like that. But he is a scoundrel three times over, because from his territory, these damned orcs came here. The hatred for him—both mine and that of Ukrainians—is simply off the charts."
