Ukrainian Forces Advance Deeper Into Russia

Forward units enter the center of Demidovka in the Russian Belgorod Region

The Ukrainian army continues its successful advance into Russian territory, expanding the combat zone in the Belgorod region. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the area of active hostilities has now reached 17 square kilometers.

Ukrainian Forces in the Center of Demidovka

The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Ukraine's forward units have entered the center of Demidovka, a village in the Belgorod region just 2 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Geolocated footage confirms the presence of Ukrainian troops, despite Russian propagandists’ claims that they still control the area.

Battles for Popovka and Advancing Tactics

Following the success in Demidovka, Ukrainian forces have also launched an offensive in Popovka, a village located 3 km further north. Russian war correspondents have acknowledged the intense fighting and noted that both villages are repeatedly changing hands, turning into contested "gray zones." Analysts anticipate further Ukrainian advances and escalating clashes in the area.

According to ISW, the total combat zone in the Krasnoyaruzhsky district of the Belgorod region now covers approximately 17 square kilometers, accounting for about 3.5% of the district’s total area.

The offensive, which began on March 17, is rapidly expanding to new settlements.

A Maneuver with Deep Strategic Purpose

Experts suggest that Ukraine's operation aims not only to establish a buffer zone but also to divert Russian forces from the Kursk region. Meanwhile, Ukrainian troops have already secured control over approximately 92 square kilometers in the neighboring Russian region.

Amid the escalating conflict, Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov has announced a mass evacuation of civilians. However, some residents are attempting to return to their homes despite the ongoing shelling and chaos, highlighting the Russian authorities’ weakness and inability to maintain control over their own border regions.
