Power in Ukraine is determined by its Constitution and people.
The White House did not agree with Vladimir Putin's proposal to introduce temporary governance in Ukraine under the auspices of the UN and Western countries. According to Putin, this plan would ensure elections and bring to power a government that would enjoy the trust of the population. However, a representative of the US National Security Council emphasized in a comment to Reuters that “power in Ukraine is determined by its Constitution and people.” Thus, the idea of “temporary governance” was rejected, The Moscow Times reports.
Meanwhile, the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov said that Putin did not discuss this issue with US President Donald Trump. “During the telephone conversations that we informed you about, this topic was not touched upon,” he answered a corresponding question from TASS. Peskov clarified that Putin's proposal is only “hypothetical.”
Earlier, Vladimir Putin said that the introduction of temporary international management could facilitate the signing of a peace treaty between Ukraine and Russia. “It would be possible to discuss under the auspices of the UN, the US, with European countries, of course, with our partners and friends the possibility of introducing temporary management in Ukraine. In order to hold democratic elections,” he said during a visit to the nuclear submarine cruiser Arkhangelsk.
