Berlin is looking for effective levers.
The German authorities are considering measures that will prevent the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline amid secret negotiations between the US and Russia on the fate of the project, sources in the German government told Bild.
According to them, rumors about a deal to supply Russian fuel to Europe via the gas pipeline have been circulating for a long time. At the same time, Berlin considers it a “realistic scenario” that Washington will be able to conclude a corresponding agreement with Moscow. This is why the German government is looking for levers with which it will be possible to block Nord Stream 2, Bild’s interlocutors noted.
Previously, sources in the Financial Times (FT) reported that the former executive director of Nord Stream 2 AG Matthias Warnig is trying to restart the gas pipeline with the help of American investors. In particular, Warnig, whom the publication calls “a close ally of Vladimir Putin”, is seeking contact with US President Donald Trump's team to propose including Nord Stream 2 in a future peace deal for Ukraine. At the same time, FT sources among officials in Washington noted that members of the Trump administration are aware of this proposal and see it as part of a reset in relations with Moscow.
In turn, Bild wrote that the US and Russia have been negotiating the launch of the gas pipeline for several weeks. According to the publication, the American side wants to act as an intermediary in the supply of Russian gas to Germany via Nord Stream 2, but only at the level of private companies. At the same time, one of the potential participants in the negotiations, US Presidential Envoy for Special Assignments Richard Grenell, denied discussing this issue with Russian representatives. Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov also said that he had no information on this matter.
At the end of last year, American investor Stephen Lynch announced his readiness to buy Nord Stream 2 if it was put up for auction. He emphasized that control over the gas pipeline was in the interests of the US government. The investor guaranteed that if he acquired the asset, he would “derussify” it.
After the Nord Streams were blown up in September 2022, only one thread of Nord Stream 2 survived. However, the gas pipeline was not put into operation because Germany stopped the certification process due to the start of a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine.
