Pakistan Threatens India With War Over Indus River Water

India has blocked the flow of the river.

Pakistan has issued a tough warning to India, threatening war in case of violating the agreements on the sharing of Indus waters, which according to an international agreement belong to Pakistan, will be treated as military aggression and will not go unanswered. This is reported by The Times of Indi.

The aggravation of relations between the two countries came after India's unilateral decision to withdraw from an agreement that regulated the distribution of river waters flowing from Kashmir. The treaty allowed Pakistan to use the waters of three major rivers - Indus, Jhelam and Chinab - vital for agriculture and water supply.

New Delhi has long complained about the inequitable distribution, with India controlling only about 20 per cent of the total flow while Pakistan controls 80 per cent. Amid tensions, India has closed border crossings, suspended visas, revoked permits already issued and given Pakistani citizens two days to leave. Military attaches from Islamabad were also expelled.

In response, Pakistan closed a crossing in Kashmir, banned the exit of Indian nationals, recalled its diplomats, restricted air travel, and completely banned the transit of goods, including shipments through intermediary states. Islamabad has also said it may stop the implementation of the 1972 Shimla Agreement, which cemented the outcome of the 1971 war and recognised Bangladesh as an independent state.

We remind you that ties between India and Pakistan have remained predominantly hostile since the partition of British India in 1947. Their shared border is one of the most militarised in the world.

The latest round of escalation came on 22 April, when an attack targeting tourists in India's northern region killed at least 27 people and injured about 20 others. The Resistance Front group, which is believed to have infiltrated from Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the attack.
