Sensors Used By Russian Federation To Monitor Nuclear Submarines Found Off Coast Of Britain

London also suspects Russian billionaires' superyachts of spying.

The British military have found in the waters near the UK touch sensors that could have been used by Russia to spy on the country's nuclear submarines. This is reported by The Sunday Times, whose journalists spoke to former defence ministers, senior military personnel and experts.

A few of the sensors were found because they had been washed ashore. Others were found with the help of British navy minesweepers. The newspaper piece said the devices were found ‘in recent years’.

According to the UK Ministry of Defence, they were installed by Moscow to track the movements of four British Vanguard submarines equipped with missiles with nuclear warheads.

Two of The Sunday Times' interlocutors claim that Russian underwater drones were detected near the crucial undersea cables for the UK around 2020. There were no ships or subs nearby, suggesting that the drones travelled long distances to reach the cables. The UK Ministry of Defence believed the drones were attempting to damage underwater communications, but there is no evidence to date that they were able to do so.

Three of The Sunday Times' interlocutors in the Ministry of Defence claim that even before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, London had intelligence reports that the superyachts of Russian billionaires were likely being used for reconnaissance off the UK coast. The publication cites one such instance. In 2018, the British HMS Albion landing ship was forced to leave the port in Limassol after a huge yacht belonging to a ‘Russian oligarch’ (name withheld - note) docked alongside it. The ship's crew decided to leave the port, suspecting the yacht of covert surveillance.

High-ranking military officials speaking to journalists compared the technological confrontation underwater to the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
