Penguins and seals live on the Heard and McDonald Islands.
The uninhabited islands of Heard and McDonald were included in the list of territories falling under US President Donald Trump's reciprocal duties to prevent other countries from using them as a loophole, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told CBS News.
Lutnick explained that the Trump administration cannot exclude any country from the list in case other countries try to ship through the region to avoid duties.
‘[Trump] said: ‘Look, I can't allow any part of the world to be a place through which China or other countries can deliver supplies.’ So he eliminated these ridiculous loopholes,’ Lutnick said.
The Heard and Macdonald Islands are uninhabited and are not states. They belong to Australia, against which Trump has also imposed duties. The White House previously said that the islands were included in the list because they are Australian territory, Axios reported.
