On Monday, Lithuanian border guards introduced a new helicopter designed to accompany trains following the Special Transit Scheme, as well as for quick response to potential incidents, reports LRT.
"This helicopter will help strengthen monitoring of trains traveling to and from the Kaliningrad region," said Minister of the Interior Vladislav Kondratovich. According to him, the security situation in the region has changed over the past few years, leading to new threats and challenges.

"Border guards remain vigilant and reliably protect the state border, so one of our priority tasks is to fully equip the service and staff with the necessary resources," the minister noted.
The helicopter presentation ceremony took place at the aviation base of the State Border Guard Service in Palukne. The head of the Directorate-General for Migration and Internal Affairs of the European Commission, Beate Gminder, participated in the event.
The Special Transit Scheme is designed to ensure the ground transit of persons between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the Russian Federation. The new helicopters are equipped with video surveillance systems, cargo suspension equipment, search and rescue equipment, fire-fighting equipment, and medical supplies.
"The second and third helicopters will carry out border control, border protection, and participate in operations in case of an emergency or accident at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP), search for people, and transport organs. In essence, all the functions performed by the State Border Guard Service," said the head of the border service, Rustam Lyubaev.
