An ambitious project is already in the works.

South Korea has announced ambitious plans to establish a lunar base by 2045, according to New Voice.

This goal is enshrined in a new space research strategy that the Korea Aerospace Agency (KASA) presented at a public hearing at the National Research Foundation in Daejeon on July 17.

The document outlines five priority missions: studying low-Earth orbit, microgravity, the moon, the sun and deep space. The main task is to develop national technologies for landing on the Moon, traveling on its surface and extracting resources, primarily water ice.

Work in this direction is already underway. For example, the Korean Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources is testing lunar rovers in abandoned coal mines, expecting to use them in the future to extract minerals in space.

South Korea already has experience in lunar exploration. In August 2022, the country launched its first lunar probe, Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (Danuri), using SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. Four months later, the vehicle entered the moon's orbit and is still transmitting data.

The next steps are to launch a robotic landing module in 2032 and build a new, more powerful lunar lander in 2040. The ultimate goal is to build a base on the moon by 2045.

South Korea is also planning its first-ever mission to Mars by the same year. The country thus joins the US, China, Russia and India in the global race to explore the moon.
