On the evening of July 22, 2025, a prisoner exchange with Russia took place. During it, the last defender of Snake Island - Vitaliy Girenko - returned to Ukraine.
The Facebook community "Zakhisniki Zmiyinogo" reports about it. It is noted that Vitaly Girenko spent more than three years in enemy captivity.
"The long-awaited exchange, the length of 3 years and 5 months for our last defender of Zmeinogo took place! Achille's Island frontrunner Vitaly Girenko is home!!! Free, indestructible in spirit and body Vitaly is finally in his native land," the publication said.
A community post from February said that the defender's young son Dmitry knows his father only from photos.
"When the man was captured, his wife Alyona was seven months pregnant," they wrote at the time.
It should be noted that the information that the last defender of Zmeinoye, a fighter of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, was released from captivity was also published by the Coordination Headquarters for the treatment of prisoners of war.
The ninth stage of the prisoner exchange with the Russian side, which was agreed upon during negotiations in Istanbul, took place on July 24.
