A Bottle Of Champagne Came To Earth From Space

It was created for use in an airless environment.

Champagne house G. H. Mumm said it has successfully sent a bottle of sparkling wine specially created for consumption in airless space into space and back. The Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar was launched into space from a spaceport in Florida on June 25 and returned to Earth on July 15.

The bottle is a half-glass shape protected by a stainless steel opening and closing mechanism, the same material used by Maison Mumm for its vats in Reims. The bottle is protected by an aircraft aluminum outer casing decorated with a red Mumm Cordon Rouge ribbon. The bottle cork is secured with a metal ring.

To compensate for the weakening of taste and aroma that occurred in space, the production technology of Mumm Cordon Rouge had to be modified. The intensity of the flavors was enhanced by long aging and the addition of a dosed liqueur derived from wines aged in oak barrels. The bottle is scheduled to be opened for champagne tasting five months after landing.

The bottle was delivered to space as part of a mission by private company Axiom Space on SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft.

The project began in 2017. In addition to the Champagne house itself, Octave de Gaulle, founder of Spade, a company specializing in designing products for human life beyond Earth, the French Space Agency and Jean-François Clervois, an astronaut at the European Space Agency and veteran of three NASA space missions, worked on the creation. The first prototype of the Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar was unveiled in 2018. And in March 2025, weightlessness testing was completed.
