Both NATO commanders and Polish intelligence say so.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, citing information from NATO commanders, warned that a direct military threat from Russia could appear for the country as early as 2027. Deputy Defense Minister and Civic Coalition deputy Ciezary Tomczyk spoke on the topic on the Radio Zet Guest program, Polskie Radio reported:
- Our intelligence services also point to such a possible scenario. Both NATO commanders and ourselves are talking about it," Tomczyk said. - We are doing this to send a clear signal to Russia and China that we are aware of the plans and want to prevent them," he stressed.
- Are Poland and other countries of the North Atlantic Alliance preparing for a possible defensive operation?
- It is enough to look at the level of spending on armaments," the deputy minister said. He recalled that in the country's budget for next year, defense spending should amount to about 5% of GDP, which means almost a quarter of the entire budget.
Tomczyk named the Eastern Shield program, the modernization of the army and the beginning of training of reservists among the measures to increase Poland's security. He also announced important changes in the investment process of the defense industry:
- We are light years ahead of Germany. Today the president will be handed the Strategic Investment Act. We are exempting them from environmental decisions and the Army will be able to start construction within 30 days. In the case of drones and countermeasures systems, the obligation of public procurement is lifted," he explained.
Tomczyk's meeting with the commander-in-chief of NATO forces
Tomczyk also responded to a question about PM Tusk's meeting with General Alexus Hrynkiewicz, the commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Europe:
- This is the result of our role in the security system. Poland borders Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, and is a key logistical base for military assistance to Kiev.
The meeting will focus on Poland's security in the context of NATO's regional plans.
