Approval of the U.S. Democratic Party is at its lowest level in more than three decades.
A new The Wall Street Journal poll released Saturday shows that.
The new poll, conducted by Democratic pollster John Anzalone and Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio, found that Democrats' popularity is at its lowest level in more than three decades of WSJ polling, with 63 percent of voters having an unfavorable opinion of the party.
Only 33 percent of voters have a favorable view of Democrats, and a paltry 8 percent have a "very favorable" opinion.
Although voters still have significant concerns about how the president and the Republican Party handle the economy, inflation, tariffs and foreign policy, a majority of respondents nonetheless say they have more confidence in Republicans to handle those issues in Congress.
And Donald Trump and the Republican Party as a whole are also disliked by more Americans than they like, but far fewer than Democrats in this poll. According to the WSJ poll, the president has a -7 point unfavorable view, while the Republican Party has a -11 point unfavorable view.
"The Democrats' brand is so bad that they have no credibility to criticize Trump or the Republican Party. Until they reconnect with real voters and workers about who they stand for and what their economic message is, they're going to be in trouble," Anzalone told the newspaper.
Despite widespread irritation with Democrats, voters still say they would support a Democrat for Congress over a Republican if the election were held today, 46 percent to 43 percent. That's still down from 2017, six months into Trump's first term, when Democrats held an 8-point advantage in that category.
WSJ surveyed 1,500 registered voters from July 16 to July 20 with landlines and cell phones. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
