The West is ready to respond.
The Kaliningrad region, bordering Lithuania and Poland, has always been one of the first targets for NATO in case Russia dares to attack the Alliance countries. In an interview with Delfi, former U.S. Army commander in Europe Ben Hodges said this:
- I wanted to quote the commander of the U.S. Army in Europe and Africa, General Christopher Donahue. So, he said the Alliance can "wipe out in an unheard of amount of time and faster than we could ever do." Kaliningrad region. So my question is: How is NATO changing its approach to defending its eastern flank, especially the Baltic states? And has Kaliningrad become one of the first targets for NATO?"
- Kaliningrad has always been one of the first targets. If Russia ever attacks a NATO country, rest assured that Kaliningrad, and all Russian capabilities there, will be destroyed in the first hours. So I was very pleased to hear General Donahue be so candid: whether it's ground troops or various other assets, we will need to ensure that we neutralize this Russian enclave or exclave on the Baltic Sea. That's a real vulnerability for the Russians.
And so they have to think, and that's part of deterrence. You know, when we tell the Russians what we can do and what we are prepared to do if a terrible decision is made, for example, to invade a NATO country, you lose, for example, Kaliningrad. So Russians should not be deluded about what they think we will or will not do. This is why we were so effective during the 40 years of the Cold War, because we clearly demonstrated what we have and how prepared we are.
