The Telegraph: Trump Picked A Good Time To Issue An Ultimatum To Putin
Donald Trump

Moscow will face massive repercussions.

US President Donald Trump couldn't have picked a better time to announce a new deadline for Russia to agree to end its war against Ukraine.

According to an article for The Telegraph columnist Con Coughlin, three times Trump thought he had convinced Russian dictator Putin to accept the terms of a ceasefire. And three times Putin ended his phone conversation with the American leader with "a rocket attack on some city, like Kiev," prompting Trump to declare, "You can't do that."

Coughlin said Trump's belated realization that Putin was simply "beckoning me to help" to buy time for Russian Federation's war effort and is not interested in ending the war means Moscow has less than two weeks to change tactics or face the consequences.

The columnist noted that there is also little doubt that Trump is serious about his intentions, given a number of highly favorable - at least for the United States - trade agreements the White House has recently struck with some of the world's major economic powers.

But as Coughlin reasoned, the prospect of facing secondary sanctions from the United States is not a threat that Putin can ignore, since his ability to sustain the war effort depends heavily on the revenue Moscow derives from energy trade

Coughlin also added that there are signs that Putin himself is under pressure in Moscow, as evidenced by reports of purges in the ruling elite.

"The scale of Putin's difficulties became apparent last weekend when the Kremlin had to cancel this year's annual naval parade because of the scale of combat losses in Ukraine," the columnist emphasized.

Thus, Trump's decision to postpone the ceasefire deadline is timely, as it comes at a time when Putin is rapidly losing all options to continue his so-called "special military operation."

"If Putin is made to realize that he has no chance of winning the war in Ukraine, he will have no choice but to accept Trump's ceasefire plan," the columnist stated.

Trump's ultimatum

A few days ago, Trump threatened sanctions against both Russia and buyers of its export products if no progress is made on ending the war in Ukraine within 10 days.

The White House chief previously gave the Russian dictator 50 days to do so, but changed his mind and reduced the deadline to 10-12 days.
