He was named as the culprit in the WSU's Kursk operation.
According to Russian Z-channels, there has been a change of command in Russia's "North" troop grouping: Colonel-General Alexander Lapin has been replaced by Lieutenant-General Evgeny Nikiforov, reports Astra.
Nikiforov was sent to the Kursk region back in August 2024, when AFU units entered there. But the management of this area was still left to Lapin, which led to a "dual power" that lasted until the last days.
Now, Alexander Lapin is reportedly dismissed from the Russian Armed Forces, according to some reports - at his own request and due to deteriorating health.
Lapin had been heading the troops of the Central Military District since 2017. In 2022, he was removed from his post as commander of the "Center" group after criticizing Ramzan Kadyrov for failures near Liman in Donbass.
In addition, this general has repeatedly been caught up in scandals: from rewarding his son for a failed offensive to the case when he pointed a gun at a mobilized man, forcing him to return to his position.
From the spring of 2024, Lapin headed the Leningrad Military District and the "North" group. Western media, including the Wall Street Journal, named him as one of those responsible for the breakthrough of Ukrainian troops into the Kursk region in the summer of 2024.
The new commander, Lieutenant General Yevgeny Nikiforov, previously headed the Western Military District, Group West and was chief of the General Staff of the Russian Ground Forces.
