The meeting will be held in the state's largest city.
A meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin is expected to take place as early as this Friday in Alaska. According to The New York Times, the White House has not yet confirmed the exact location of the meeting, but there are some indications that the meeting will take place in Alaska's largest city, Anchorage.
According to the publication, Larry Disbrow, a short-term rental realtor in Anchorage and also an honorary German consul, said he has rented a six-room house to the Secret Service for the meeting.
"The U.S. Secret Service contacted me this morning and asked if I had availability, and I agreed to the window they wanted," Disbrow said.
He also added that he understood why Alaska might be an attractive place for such a meeting from a historical standpoint, but "it surprised him."
At the same time, Suzanne LaFrance, the mayor of Anchorage, said in an interview Saturday that she had received no information about whether her city would host a meeting between Trump and Putin.
"Hosting leaders here in Alaska is business as usual for us," LaFrance said. "Serving as a place of diplomacy is part of our history because we are at the crossroads of the world."
The publication recalls that Trump has visited Alaska at least five times since taking office in 2017, mostly stopping at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage. The meeting with Mr. Putin will be Mr. Trump's first official visit to the state since the start of his second term.
