Syrsky spoke about the significance of the Kursk operation for Ukraine.
The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Alexandr Syrsky, commented on the results of a large-scale operation in Russia's Kursk region that took place in the summer of 2024, The Washington Post reported.
He said the main goal of diverting Russian troops and equipment was achieved, which helped protect Ukrainian territory from a large-scale offensive.
"At first, we planned more raids, but then I gave up this idea because I realized that we need this territory," Syrsky said in an interview.
He added that the territory of Kursk region "has been needed by Ukraine for a long time" and has become a key bridgehead for further actions.
The operation was prepared in the strictest secrecy: even the closest partners, including the United States, were not informed.
Syrsky emphasized that this is a lesson after the failed counteroffensive of 2023.
"Victories love silence. They are born in silence and prepared in silence. When an information campaign is created or conducted and everyone shouts, 'Give me this, give me that,' then, of course, the enemy also knows and also prepares," the commander-in-chief explained.
The invasion was the first time since World War II that foreign troops occupied part of Russian territory.
Ukrainian forces captured more than 1,000 prisoners, and Moscow was forced to move troops from other directions.
