Cambodia has nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in resolving the border conflict with Thailand. In a letter to the Nobel Committee, Prime Minister Hun Manet thanked Trump for "restoring peace and stability" and noted his contribution to reducing tensions in "some of the world's most volatile regions," according to TIME magazine (translated by Charter97.org).

The move comes as a surprise amid Cambodia's longstanding friendship with China. According to experts - this effort to improve relations with Washington could mark a significant turnaround in the country's foreign policy.

The US-Cambodia relationship deteriorated in 2017 when the joint military exercise Angkor Sentinel was canceled shortly before Trump's inauguration. The US later imposed sanctions for human rights abuses and corruption, while Cambodia strengthened ties with China, its main trading and military partner.

With the rise to power in 2023 of Hun Manet, a graduate of the US military academy at West Point, the country began a "recalibration" of foreign policy. In February, Phnom Penh offered to resume joint exercises with the US, and the US defense secretary is expected to visit the Rim naval base this year.

Experts call the move a "cheap but spectacular gesture" to strengthen ties with Washington and potentially win trade benefits, investment and military cooperation. Phnom Penh's policy is described as "strategic flexibility" to reduce dependence on China.
