Zelensky Explained Why Putin Is Pushing For A Meeting With Trump

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky does not know what illegitimate Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump will talk about during their meeting in Alaska on August 15. Zelensky said this while speaking to journalists on August 12, writes "Interfax-Ukraine".

"The result of this bilateral meeting in Alaska I do not know. That is, we will see it with you, probably. I don't know what they're going to talk about without us. There is probably their own bilateral track. Ukrainian issues should be discussed by the three of us at least," he said.

In Zelensky's opinion, the fact that the meeting between Putin and Trump will take place on US territory is a "personal victory" for the illegitimate Russian president. Putin thanks to this meeting comes out of isolation, the Ukrainian president believes.

In addition, the head of the Kremlin thus postponed the introduction of sanctions announced by the United States, Zelensky continued.

"President Trump has serious sanctions, and we are very much looking forward to these sanctions. We will see what happens next. We will have a conversation tomorrow in the format of all of Europe and the United States," he added.

The president said it is necessary to hold three meetings: two bilateral and one trilateral. "And, probably, after the trilateral one we will have a result," Zelensky added.

"And, in principle, the American side is not against Europe witnessing some result. Why did I insist? Because I have no security guarantees in any arrangements. The economic ones are the EU's. And I want us to know when we will be in the EU. Because we are constantly being blocked by one or the other. And I said: for it to be a common agreement, we need the presence of Europe," Interfax-Ukraine quoted him as saying.

Negotiations on Ukraine without Ukraine will not yield results, he emphasized.

"We support what President Trump wanted - ceasefire, and then sit down at the negotiating table and talk about everything else. Because substantive and productive conversations without us about us will not work. They're possible, but they won't be factual. Just like I can't say anything about another state or make a decision. I think Putin is winning on this one. Because he's pushing for, excuse me, pictures. He needs a photo from the meeting with President Trump," Zelensky summarized.
