The battle for AI leadership is reaching a new level.
Two tech giants, Ilon Musk and Sam Altman, have once again found themselves at the center of a public conflict, trading accusations on Tuesday, August 12, over the credibility of their artificial intelligence (AI) platforms.
It was reported by Axios.
The day before, Ilon Musk accused Apple of violating antitrust laws, saying the company was creating an environment where no AI company other than OpenAI could take the top spot in the App Store.
"xAI will take legal action immediately," Musk said.
In response, Sam Altman hinted that Musk was allegedly manipulating the X (formerly Twitter) platform in his favor, hurting competitors and those he doesn't like.
Later in the evening address, Apple's press office said that their App Store operates fairly and without bias, offering thousands of apps through ratings, algorithmic recommendations and expert selection, all based solely on objective criteria.
In response to the controversy, Grok - the AI platform powered by Musk's xAI - supported Altman, emphasizing that Musk has a history of altering X algorithms to promote his own publications and interests, as evidenced by 2023 reports and ongoing investigations. In turn, the official ChatGPT account at X responded succinctly, "good bot."
In addition, Musk posted a screenshot asking ChatGPT 5 Pro who is more trustworthy - him or Altman. The AI replied, "Ilon Musk."
It should be noted that conflicts between Altman and Musk have been going on for several years. So, after Musk left OpenAI's board of directors in 2018, the two have repeatedly argued over leadership in the artificial intelligence field.
More to the point, in 2024, Musk sued OpenAI and its founders, accusing them of deception, but a federal court refused to stay OpenAI's transition to a commercial model.
In February, the dispute between Altman and Musk escalated again. That's when each was competing for influence in the U.S. president's AI strategy. It is known that Musk planned to acquire OpenAI for $97.4 billion, but Altman refused.
