It will have four levels.

The innovative Golden Dome missile defense system in the United States will have four layers - one satellite and three ground-based - with 11 short-range batteries that will be located throughout the U.S., including in Alaska and Hawaii.

According to Reuters.

The slides, tagged "Do it fast, think big!" were presented to 3,000 defense contractors in Huntsville, Alabama, and reveal the unprecedented complexity of the system, which faces an ambitious deadline of 2028.

The cost of the system is estimated at $175 billion, but the slides show that uncertainty still hangs over the basic architecture of the project, as the number of launchers, interceptors, ground stations and missile sites needed for the system has yet to be determined.

"They have a lot of money, but they don't yet have a target estimate of what it will cost," one U.S. official said.

Congress has now allocated $25 billion for the Golden Dome in Trump's tax-and-spending bill passed in July. Another $45.3 billion is allocated for the missile defense system in the president's 2026 budget request.

It is noted that the system's architecture consists of four layers: space-based sensing and targeting for missile warning and tracking, as well as "missile defense" and three ground-based layers consisting of missile interceptors, radar installations and potentially lasers.

One of the surprises was Lockheed Martin's next-generation interceptors, which will be part of the "top layer" along with Aegis systems.

The Pentagon said it is gathering information "from industry, academia, national laboratories and other government agencies to support the Golden Dome." One of the key goals of the new missile defense system is to shoot down targets during their "boost phase," the slow and predictable ascent of a missile through Earth's atmosphere.
