Tallinn informed partners and allies about the incident.
The Estonian Foreign Ministry has declared the First Secretary of the Russian Embassy Dmitri Prilepin persona non grata due to active interference in the country's internal affairs and undermining the constitutional order.
The website of the Estonian Foreign Ministry and ERR reports this.
The Estonian Foreign Ministry summoned the chargé d'affaires of the Russian embassy today, August 13, and handed him a diplomatic note noting that the first secretary of the Russian embassy has been declared persona non grata and the diplomat must leave Estonia.
The Foreign Ministry explained to the Russian representative that Estonia does not intend to tolerate Russian Federation's actions against their constitutional order and internal stability.
Estonia will also inform partners and allies about the incident.
Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkni commented on the expulsion of the Russian Federation employee.
"The said diplomat was directly and actively engaged in undermining Estonia's constitutional order and legal system, as well as dividing Estonian society by contributing to the commission of crimes against the state, including several sanctions violations," he said.
At the same time, according to Tsahkni, as of now one citizen of the Republic of Estonia has even been convicted of committing these crimes.
"The constant interference of the Russian embassy in the internal affairs of the Republic of Estonia must stop, and the expulsion of the diplomat is a signal that Estonia does not allow activities coordinated and organized by a foreign state on its territory," he stressed.
It should be noted that the actions of the Estonian government are in line with Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, according to which the host state may at any time, without giving reasons for its decision, notify the accrediting state of the decision to expel the diplomat.
