Details have come to light.
Russian ruler Vladimir Putin continues a string of international calls ahead of his scheduled Aug. 15 summit with Donald Trump.
On Tuesday evening, Putin called DPRK dictator Kim Jong Un, the Kremlin press service said.
The Russian ruler thanked his colleague for "support during the liberation of the Kursk region territory" and noted the "courage and heroism" of "DPRK warriors." He also shared with Kim Jong Un "information in the context of the upcoming talks with <...> Trump," the Kremlin said, recalling that Moscow and Pyongyang have signed a treaty on "comprehensive strategic partnership" since June 2024.
Kim replied to Putin that Pyongyang will always "fully support all measures of the Russian leadership."
In his summit with Trump, Putin intends to offer to stop the war on the condition that Ukraine fully surrenders the territory of Donbass, including nearly a third of the Donetsk region, which is still under AFU control.
Putin's position on the Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions remains unclear. Bloomberg sources said the Kremlin was ready to give up claims to unclaimed land in these regions, which it has annexed and declared Russian territory within administrative boundaries.
Bild sources familiar with the content of talks that U.S. officials held with the Europeans and Ukrainians later said Putin had been misinterpreted by U.S. special envoy Steven Whitkoff. He held talks with the Russian president in the Kremlin, where he heard the ideas Putin voiced.
According to Bild, Putin still wants the entire territory of four Ukrainian regions.
