And will continue to sell weapons to Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump is still "angry" with Vladimir Putin, Axios reported, citing US officials. "The common view for months now has been: we could collapse the Russian economy as soon as tomorrow. There are many ways to hurt Ukraine. But if he had to pick a side, he would start by weakening the Russian economy. He is fed up with all this," the Axios interlocutor said. The official added that even if diplomatic efforts fail, Trump will continue to sell weapons to NATO countries for subsequent transfer to Ukraine.
Although arms deliveries to Kiev have not been officially stopped, the mechanism has changed: Trump proposes to transfer them not directly to Kiev, but to NATO allies who pay for these weapons. According to U.S. officials, Trump's rhetoric can sometimes sound pro-Russian simply because he sees this approach as helpful to the deal.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and his team are now trying to maximize their influence on Trump's position ahead of his meeting with Putin. Two sources told Axios that Trump is scheduled to have a virtual meeting with Zelensky and a group of European leaders on Wednesday. Zelensky is trying to minimize the significance of Russia's recent successes on the home front and is actively negotiating with politicians in Europe and beyond to hedge against an unfavorable outcome in the Alaska talks.
Zelensky and the Europeans fear that by looking Putin in the eye, Trump might agree to his demands. "At the moment no one knows what Trump wants to get from Putin on Friday. We don't know how much we will be able to influence Trump, but we have to keep trying," a Ukrainian official told Axios.
Last Friday, Trump had intended to announce tough sanctions against Russia, but instead said he would invite Putin to Alaska.
