Atlantic Council: U.S. Should Not Make Concessions To Putin

The sooner Russia is stopped, the lower the price for the rest of the world.

Ukraine has experienced more than three years of full-scale war. However, most Ukrainians realize that territorial losses will not bring long-lasting peace. Moscow is demanding capitulation, and its goal is the destruction of Ukrainian statehood, writes Atlantic Council (translated by Charter97.org).

A Russian victory would signal continued aggression - the next targets could be Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Central Asian countries, and NATO members Poland, Finland, and the Baltics. This would call into question the very basis of NATO's collective defense and could draw the United States into a war with Russia.

In addition, Moscow's success would destroy the nuclear nonproliferation regime. The effectiveness of Putin's nuclear blackmail would encourage other countries to build their own weapons. Authoritarian regimes around the world, from China to Iran, will find the West too weak to defend its values and allies.

The fall of Ukraine will undermine U.S. credibility and push many countries to ally with Russia and China. To avoid this, the West needs to provide Kiev with weapons and strengthen sanctions, not push for capitulation.

Temporary cessation of war at the cost of territory will only legitimize expansion and lead to even greater instability. The sooner Russia is stopped, the lower the cost to the world.
