They should be part of the final settlement of the war issue.
U.S. President Donald Trump is willing to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, but not as part of NATO.
This was reported by Politico.
All three interlocutors - a European diplomat, a British and official and a person briefed on Trump's phone call with Europe and Ukraine on Wednesday - said the same information.
They said that if a cease-fire is reached, the U.S. is prepared to play a role in providing Kiev with the means to deter possible future Russian aggression.
But a source familiar with the conversation clarified that Trump said he would only make such a commitment if the effort did not take place within NATO.
At the same time, the U.S. president did not specify exactly what he meant by security guarantees. He only discussed the broader concept.
According to the words of the British official, Trump recognizes that security guarantees from the US should be part of the final settlement of the war issue. The US leader also believes that the US has played a key role in this.
The publication further writes that whatever the security guarantees, Trump has made it clear that the US will not continue to supply weapons or military personnel directly to Ukraine, although it will sell guns to Europe for Ukraine's use.
"The deliveries are likely to be limited and are sure to disappoint Ukraine's supporters, who want stronger assurances from the U.S. to deter Russia from invading again after the fighting ends," Politico writes.
It's not clear, however, whether the editorial board is drawing that conclusion or whether sources said so.
Reminder that U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Alaska as early as tomorrow, August 15.
