Anti-government protests continue in Serbia. In the capital Belgrade and a number of other cities, police special forces violently dispersed protesters.
According to RBC-Ukraine.
Protests in the country intensified on Tuesday, August 12. Opponents and supporters of the Serbian government have clashed after more than nine months of uninterrupted protests against President Alexander Vucic.
The clashes began in Vrbas, northwest of the capital Belgrade, where police separated two groups outside the local office of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party.
Police Commissioner Dragan Vasilevic told state broadcaster RTS that the protesters "came to attack" supporters of the ruling party outside its office. Law enforcers detained several people.
On Wednesday night, supporters of the president and anti-government demonstrators threw flares and other objects at each other in the northern city of Novi Sad, prompting police to intervene.
Thousands of people gathered for protests in other parts of the country, mostly near the local headquarters of Vucic's party.
Police warmed up crowds in the town of Kraljevo, while protests also took place in the southern city of Nis and the central towns of Cacak and Kragujevac.
In Belgrade, police dispersed anti-government demonstrators in one neighborhood and used tear gas to disperse them.
Serbian President Alexander Vucic said more than 60 protesters and 16 police officers were injured in Thursday night's protests in Serbia.
Interior Minister Ivica Dacic called for the "restoration of law and order," while Vucic called anti-government demonstrators "thugs," a familiar way for the government to characterize opponents.
