"Lukashenko Has Run Out Of 'schemes'"

Gigantomania is no good.

Economic observer Andrzej Makhovsky told about the situation with pork in Belarus. And what the ruler's "mega-ideas" have to do with it.

- Belarus has become a record-breaker in the purchase of Russian pork. This is strange, because we are often proud of our food that we sell to Russia. But that's not the case with pork now, even though we used to be the ones supplying Russia with pork," Andrei Makhovsky said on "Euroradio". - And this story is about how Lukashenko's "mega-ideas" are turning into some substance.

Belarus lacks its own pork, first, because of the mass extinction of pigs in recent years, the columnist notes. Sometimes they die out in whole districts.

- The plague of pigs is everywhere, not only in Belarus. But in Poland, for example, pigs don't die out so massively. And this is a story about "strong economists". Lukashenko, as a Marxist, knows that the most profitable production is large-scale.

That's why he got the idea to build giant pig farms. That's how it works. If a plague comes to a small farm, 100 pigs die. And it doesn't affect the country much.

And when the plague came to a complex with 100 thousand pigs, they all die out at once. So the first reason is gigantomania.

Production of pork should have become cheaper, but now we may have a shortage of pork.

And the second reason is that Lukashenko has run out of "schemes".

Makhovsky points out that Belarus began to sell pork profitably to Russia when the latter imposed sanctions on the import of Western food.

-Then shrimps evolved in Belarusian water bodies. Well, everything is clear with them. With pork it was like this: we bought it, as well as beef, in Poland - it was cheaper there, despite our large-scale production. We took Polish meat to meat processing plants, and sold Belarusian pork to Russia.

And then the sanctions happened - now we can't import Polish pork and beef. The "scheme" ended, and now we don't have enough pork. We have to buy pork from Russia ourselves.

Lukashenko always has a lot of "mega-ideas", but there is no one to tell him that each of them may have such nuances.
