The Kremlin has proposed a deal that could help both save face.
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will hold talks in Alaska on Friday. The U.S. president's hopes for a ceasefire agreement on Ukraine are still unclear, but Putin has suggested a possible nuclear deal could help both save face, writes Reuters.
A source close to the Kremlin told Reuters that it appeared the two sides were able to find some common ground in advance.
"In all likelihood, some terms will be agreed tomorrow (Friday) because Trump cannot be refused and we cannot refuse (because of sanctions pressure)," the source said.
According to Reuters, Putin has laid out tough conditions for a full ceasefire, but one compromise could be a phased end to the air war.
At the same time, analysts say Putin may try to give the appearance that he is giving Trump what he wants while retaining the leeway to escalate in Ukraine if he wants to.
"If they (the Russians) can offer a deal that provides for some kind of truce but leaves Russia in control of escalating the conflict and creates no real deterrent on the ground or in the airspace over Ukraine ... from Putin's point of view, that would be a perfect outcome," said Sam Green, director of democratic sustainability at the Center for European Policy Analysis.
