Dozens of soldiers and officials were arrested, including two generals and a former governor.

Mali's ruling military junta says it has foiled an attempted coup d'état. Two generals, the former governor of Mopti province, dozens of soldiers, as well as a French citizen have been arrested. This is reported on Friday, August 15, DW.

More than 30 soldiers and officials from Mali's Defense Ministry have been taken into custody, according to Reuters. A French citizen arrested was accused of working "for French intelligence."

French news agency AFP puts the total number of those arrested at 55. It said the junta has accused "foreign states" of trying to destabilize Mali, but did not name a specific country.

According to AFP, Mali's former prime minister Choguel Maiga has also been taken into custody, with the politician accused of corruption. His arrest is not officially linked to the coup attempt.

After the 2021 putsch, Mali has been ruled by a military junta led by transitional president Assimi Goita. In 2022, France began withdrawing troops from the country.

In parallel, Bamako has built close ties with Russia and the PMC Wagner. Its fighters were called "military consultants" in Mali. In June 2025, the Wagnerites announced their withdrawal from Mali. The mercenaries were repeatedly accused of killing civilians.
