Powerful Exercise In The South China Sea: Philippines And Australia Engage 3,600 Military Personnel

Allies from the U.S. and Canada are also taking part.

The Philippines and Australia have begun joint military exercises near the South China Sea with allies from the United States and Canada.

According to Bloomberg.

The maneuvers, which will last from August 15 to 29, are taking place in Palawan province, which overlooks the disputed waters of the South China Sea.

The exercise involves about 3,600 military personnel from the Philippines and Australia, as well as representatives from the Royal Canadian Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps.

The Philippine military says the exercises are expected to be the largest and most complex since bilateral defense maneuvers began in 2023. They include practicing operations in the high seas and on the coast, as well as interoperability between military units from different countries.

It is worth noting that Manila has increasingly turned to allies to counter Beijing's growing aggression and territorial claims to the South China Sea. Those claims overlap with the waters of neighboring countries, and in 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague invalidated them, underscoring the international legal status of those waters.

Experts say the exercises serve not only to practice military skills, but also to demonstrate the strength and willingness of allies to cooperate in the strategically important region.

The Philippines and Australia, as well as their partners from Canada and the United States, are seeking to enhance defense cooperation and stability in Southeast Asia.
