European Leaders React To Trump And Putin Meeting In Alaska

The EU doubts the Kremlin's interest in ending the war.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin met on the night of August 15-16. Europe has already spoken out about the events in Alaska.

What Europe thinks about the meeting between Trump and Putin, according to RBC-Ukraine.

Czech Republic

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky welcomed Trump's efforts to end the war in Ukraine. However, he doubts Putin's interest in doing so.

"If Putin was serious about negotiating peace, he wouldn't have been attacking Ukraine all day," Lipavsky wrote on X (Twitter).

The minister also noted that Putin had said the very propaganda nonsense about the "roots of the conflict" that his state television preaches.

"The problem is Russian imperialism, not the Ukrainian desire to live freely. And don't forget that these words also obscure Putin's efforts to return the security architecture to 1997. To the time when the Czech Republic was not yet a NATO member," the Czech foreign minister added.

Lithuania

Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Shakaliene accused Putin of manipulation and veiled threats after the dictator's words of "warning" Ukraine and Europe not to "sabotage negotiations."

"A war criminal who has a habit of poisoning his critics with radioactive substances addresses the president of the United States with the words, 'It is very nice to see you healthy and alive,'" the minister said in an X (Twitter)."

She also emphasized that Russia continues to shell civilians in Ukraine.

Germany

German diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger, who chaired the Munich Security Conference until 2022, said Trump got nothing out of the Alaska summit. Putin, on the other hand, got the red carpet with the US president.

"As one would expect: no ceasefire, no peace. No real progress - a clear 1:0 score in Putin's favor - no new sanctions. For Ukrainians: nothing. For Europe: total disappointment," he noted.
