EU Leaders Release Joint Statement Following Alaska Meeting

There should be no restrictions on the AFU, and no veto on Ukraine's accession to the EU and NATO.

European leaders have released a joint statement following a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The statement from French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen published on the EC website.

The leaders welcomed President Trump's efforts to stop the killings in Ukraine, end Russia's war of aggression and achieve a just and lasting peace.

"President Trump envisions that the next step should be further talks involving President Zelensky, with whom he will meet soon," the statement said.

European leaders also emphasized that they are ready to work with President Trump and President Zelensky to hold a trilateral summit with the support of Europe. At the same time, it is emphasized that Ukraine must have clear security guarantees to effectively protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"We welcome President Trump's statement that the US is ready to provide security guarantees. The coalition of volunteers is ready to play an active role. Ukraine's armed forces and its cooperation with third countries should not be subject to any restrictions. Russia cannot veto Ukraine's path to the EU and NATO."

The European leaders also note that decisions about its territory will be made by Ukraine and international borders should not be changed by force.

"We will continue to support Ukraine. We are determined to do more to strengthen Ukraine to end the fighting and achieve a just and lasting peace," the statement said.

Ukraine's allies also say they are ready to keep up pressure on Russia.

"We will continue to tighten sanctions and take broader economic measures to pressure Russia's military economy until a just and lasting peace is achieved."
