It Has Become Known What Guarantees Trump Offers For Ukraine

Along the lines of NATO's Article 5.

US President Donald Trump discussed with European allies security guarantees for Ukraine on NATO principles.

This was reported by CNN and The Guardian, citing their own sources.

An unnamed European official said part of the talks with US President Donald Trump concerned security guarantees for Ukraine under the principle of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, with European and US support if a peace deal is reached.

The European official said NATO would not be involved in the guarantees. The exact details of the proposal are unknown, and it is unclear how these guarantees will be implemented.

The RBC-Ukraine source confirms that this issue was indeed raised during the conversation, which was formulated as "Non NATO article 5 secutiry guarantees," that is, security guarantees as in section 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty regarding "collective security," but not in the format of NATO itself.

In particular, the American side offered such a security guarantee, allegedly agreed with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. This was voiced by the Americans during their conversation with Zelensky, and later repeated already during a joint conversation involving European leaders.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also noted that Trump's prophesies regarding security guarantees for Ukraine were the "most interesting developments" of the Alaska summit.

She also emphasized that Trump in his conversation allegedly adhered to the Italian idea of security guarantees, which was inspired by Article 5 of the NATO treaty.

What is known about Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty

The North Atlantic Treaty Article 5 is NATO's key principle defining collective defense.

It declares that an armed attack on one or more member countries of the Alliance in Europe or North America is considered an attack on all members. In such a case, each member country is obliged to assist the one attacked by taking such measures as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force.

The first time in NATO's history that Article 5 was required following the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.
