Trump Told Zelensky About Putin's Demands
Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky

Earlier, the Ukrainian president disagreed with them.

Vladimir Putin has not changed his position on the territorial issue in Ukraine, about 20% of which his army occupied during the 3.5-year war. He still wants Ukraine to give him the territories of Donetsk and Lugansk regions under its control, US President Donald Trump told European leaders and Vladimir Zelensky following talks in Alaska.

This was reported by Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the content of the allies' phone call. The same Kremlin demand was voiced by Trump's special envoy Steve Whitkoff after his last conversation with Putin, which resulted in Trump deciding to meet with the Russian leader in person. At the same time, Russia's plans for the Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions, large parts of which it does not control, remained unclear.

Moscow will not demand that the unoccupied areas of these two southern regions be handed over to it, meaning the front line in them will effectively be frozen, sources told Bloomberg after Trump's conversation with European leaders.

Zelensky has previously ruled out handing over the unoccupied areas of Donbass to Russia, including because it would then get the powerful defense lines erected there since 2014. And the regions bordering Donbass, such as Dnipropetrovsk region, would be defenseless in case of a new Russian offensive. In addition, several major cities, primarily the industrial centers of Slavyansk and Kramatorsk, remain under Kiev's control in the Donetsk region. And Pokrovsk, which the Russian army has been trying to capture for a year now, is the central supply hub for the AFU units defending Donbas.
