The Last Defender Of Zmeinoye Returned From Russian Captivity

Ukrainian soldier Vitaly Girenko, the last remaining defender of Zminy Island, returned to his hometown of Izmail, in the Odessa region, from Russian captivity.

Girenko was exchanged on July 23 - during the ninth stage of the return of prisoners as part of a meeting of delegations from Ukraine and the aggressor country Russia in Istanbul - and has been undergoing rehabilitation for several weeks.

The defender of Zmeinoye spent almost three and a half years in Russian captivity.

"Finally it's all over, the captivity and the first adjustment. Yesterday I bathed in the sea for the first time. Already getting used to people. But not completely yet. So everything is normal, everything is going its way," he told journalists.
