The phrase was accidentally picked up by the microphone on.

Before beginning a meeting with European leaders, US President Donald Trump whispered to Emmanuel Macron that someone wanted to make a deal "for him," a phrase accidentally picked up by an on-mic. The reference was to Vladimir Putin, writes CNN.

"I think he wants to make a deal for me. You know? As crazy as it sounds," Trump told Macron.

This conversation took place before the open portion of Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's meeting with European leaders, which, in addition to Macron, was attended by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

To whom Trump's words referred is unclear from the phrase, but CNN claims that the White House chief was talking about Putin and his willingness to reach an agreement on Ukraine.

The US president also mentioned organizing a trilateral meeting with Putin and Zelensky, which he announced.

Reminder, Zelensky at a briefing in Washington confirmed that first his bilateral meeting with Putin is being prepared, and then - a trilateral meeting with the participation of Trump. According to him, the initiator of negotiations at the level of heads of state is Russia.

The Kremlin confirmed Putin's phone conversation with Trump, but did not say anything specific about the meeting with Zelensky. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov only said that Trump and Putin discussed the possibility of "raising the level" of direct Russian-Ukrainian talks.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who attended the White House meeting on August 18, said that talks between Putin and Zelensky are scheduled within the next two weeks. However, he was not sure whether Putin would "have the courage" to come to the meeting.

Axios correspondent Barak Ravid also reported, citing a source, that "there is hope" to hold a meeting between Putin and Zelensky before the end of August.
