Lithuanian President Suggests Setting A Specific Date For Ukraine's EU Accession

In his opinion, this will be an important signal for Kiev.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has proposed to set a specific date for Ukraine's accession to the European Union. In his opinion, this would be an important signal for Kiev.

This is reported by LRT.

At an online meeting of the European Council heads, Nauseda suggested setting a specific date for Ukraine's accession to the EU and opening the first cluster of negotiations as early as September 2025.

"This would be a signal that is extremely important for Ukraine. We should involve it in the negotiation process by setting a specific deadline for EU membership - 2030," he said.

Nauseda also noted the importance that security guarantees have for Ukraine. U.S. support and the possibility of deploying peacekeeping forces in Ukraine have always been a key condition. After the meeting in Washington on August 18, this prospect looks quite real.

In addition, the Lithuanian president called for punishing the Russian regime for the war in Ukraine and not to ease pressure on the Kremlin.

"We must adopt the 19th package of sanctions as soon as possible. There will be no just and lasting peace if Russia goes unpunished. Frozen Russian assets should be used for Ukraine's needs," Nauseda added.
