US President Donald Trump has ordered a wall on the border with Mexico to be painted black so that the metal heats up in the sun and migrants cannot cross it.
This is reported by Bloomberg.
Work has already begun in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, where U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem personally inspected a small section of the fence.
She said workers are painting the steel posts that make up the fence black.
The minister said the directive came directly from Trump, based on the expectation that the dark paint would extend the life of the steel by slowing rusting and also discourage migrants from trying to climb over the wall, making it unbearably hot in the sun.
"We will paint the entire border wall black," Noem told reporters.
When asked that the practice could toughen conditions for migrants, she said, "Don't touch it. People have a choice."
It has not yet been specified how much the project will cost or how long it will take to paint the entire wall.
The El Paso sector, which covers west Texas and all of New Mexico, now has about nine migrants crossing the border each day, up from 400 a day a year ago and 2,300 in 2023.
Despite the drop in the number of crossers, the administration is continuing to build the wall, filling gaps in Santa Teresa, where about seven miles of new fencing is being installed.
