Details.

The United States military detected and intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

How reported by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the aircraft remained in international airspace and did not violate U.S. or Canadian sovereign borders.

NORAD raised two F-16 fighter jets and a KC-135 refueling aircraft to identify and escort it.

The ADIZ zone extends 150 miles (241 kilometers) from the U.S. coast. All aircraft entering the zone are required to be identified.

U.S. territorial airspace begins just 22 km from the coast.

NORAD stressed that North America's defense system is based on a layered network of satellites, ground and airborne radars and fighter jets. It allows to quickly identify and monitor potential threats and respond quickly if necessary.
