North Korea Unexpectedly Recalled Its Top Officers From Russia

They arrived in Pyongyang.

Several North Korean commanders have returned from Russia, which could signal a diminished military role for the DPRK and potentially allow it to play a diminished role in any peace talks on the war against Ukraine, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper is referring to images that North Korean state media published on Thursday, August 21.

The photo shows more than a dozen commanders standing in Kim Jong Un's private office. They were hailed as "heroes" for fighting against the AFU in Kursk region.

WSJ notes that at least two of those present - Col. Gen. Kim Yong Bok and Maj. Gen. Sin Kum Chol - were personally embraced by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin at a parade in Red Square on May 9. State media said they traveled to Pyongyang for North Korea's first award ceremony for participation in an overseas operation.
