This is an optimistic signal.
China's key trade negotiator Li Chenggang will visit the United States this week. This signals renewed engagement between the countries after Beijing and Washington agreed to a truce in the trade dispute.
It was reported by Bloomberg.
The WSJ wrote Tuesday that sources said China's Vice Commerce Minister Li Chenggang will meet this week with U.S. Representative Jamison Greer and Treasury Department officials. He will also have a meeting with U.S. business representatives.
Bloomberg in turn also asked a U.S. government source whether Li is heading to the United States. To that question, the spokesman said the Chinese official would probably meet with deputy-level officials, not Greer or U.S. Defense Secretary Scott Bessent.
The spokesman said the trip was not part of official talks, adding that the U.S. welcomed China's efforts to reduce its permanent surplus with America.
The trade battle between the two countries has been in a lull since early August, when U.S. President Donald Trump extended a pause in raising duties on Chinese goods for another 90 days. Beijing followed the move by suspending the duties.
According to Bloomberg, the pause gave the countries more time to discuss other outstanding issues. In particular, tariffs related to the fentanyl trade (which Trump imposed on Beijing), US concerns over China's purchases of under-sanctioned Russian and Chinese oil, and disagreements over the operations of US businesses in the PRC.
Senior China and Northeast Asia analyst Jeremy Chan, of Eurasia Group - Li's trip to the US is an "optimistic signal for an agreement" that would pave the way for a summit between Trump and Chinese leader Si Jinping.
