If the peace talks fail.
The European Union is developing new measures to put pressure on the weakened economy of aggressor country Russia, but is increasingly realizing that it is the United States that is in the best position to "tighten the screws."
This was reported by Politico on Tuesday, August 26.
According to four European diplomats, whose names were not disclosed, the 19th package of anti-Russian sanctions, due to be unveiled next month, will not include major new restrictions on energy sales, with which the Kremlin is financing its war against Ukraine. It would target ships and companies in the "shadow fleet" that Moscow uses to circumvent sanctions and export oil.
The most painful consequences for the Kremlin, however, would come if secondary sanctions were imposed against companies or countries doing business with Russia, Politico wrote.
Many observers point out that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin held talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska after Washington announced high duties against India for its purchase of Russian oil.
The next dramatic step would be to tighten similar sanctions to cut off Russia's key trade with China. Trump appears to be reserving that option in case peace talks on Ukraine fail, the publication noted.
"I think over the next two weeks we'll find out how it turns out," Trump said Friday, Aug. 22.
