Russia And Iran Only Simulate An Alliance, Hiding Mutual Enmity

Ukrainian intelligence data.

Russia and Iran only pretend to be allies. In reality, the two countries view each other as potential enemies.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the press service of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine.

"Despite public rapprochement, relations between Russia and Iran are permeated with distrust and hidden rivalry," the intelligence service emphasized.

In particular, this is manifested in mutual espionage and conflicting geopolitical interests.

The SVR recalled that back in June, during the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, Seyed Mohammad Sadr, a member of Iran's Political Expediency Determination Council, accused Russia of passing intelligence to Israel on the location of Iranian air defense systems. He noted that this demonstrates the futility of the alliance with Moscow.

"Russia condemned Israel's attack on Iran only in words, but actually facilitated it," Sadr noted.

The intelligence agency added that after 2022, Russia invested large sums in Iran and became the largest foreign investor in the country by 2024. In 2023, investments reached $2.7 billion, and Moscow has promised to invest another $8 billion in the oil and gas sector.

A Russian nuclear power plant is operating in Bushehr (an Iranian city) and its second unit is under construction, while the Sirik thermal power plant is being built in Hormozgan province. The Russian oil company ZN Vostok is active in Iran, with key projects including the Russian-funded Resht-Astara railroad and a gas pipeline through Azerbaijan.

"However, these ambitious plans have come under threat. Historical distrust, reinforced by contemporary conflicts of interest, makes the "alliance" between the two regimes illusory. Moscow is losing not only Iran, but also its status as a global player in the Middle East," the SVR emphasized.
