Their strike capabilities are impressive.

Ukraine has developed its own long-range Flamingo cruise missile, which experts estimate could turn the tide of war, EuroNews writes.

The FP-5 Flamingo missile can cover a distance of up to 3,000 kilometers and deliver 1,150 kilograms of payload, according to the manufacturer's company. The company said it produces about one Flamingo missile a day and hopes to increase capacity to seven missiles a day by October. That translates to more than 200 missiles a month, or about 2,500 a year.

At the same time, as researcher and missile expert at the University of Oslo Fabian Hoffman notes, the Flamingo's strike capabilities far exceed those of the long-range drones and mini-winged missiles Ukraine currently uses.

First, the missile's high terminal velocity combined with its high weight allows the warhead to penetrate deeper into the target before detonation, which significantly increases the destructive power. Second, the Flamingo's large payload provides a much larger kill radius than existing Ukrainian missiles and drones:

"Even achieving a steady monthly output of 30-50 missiles would provide Ukraine with a significant stockpile of heavy cruise missiles that would likely have a tangible impact on the course of the war."

Austrian military expert Gustav Gressel notes: whether the Flamingo will ultimately change the nature of the war in Ukraine ultimately depends on the intelligence Kiev has on its targets.

"Is the target secure? Are there gaps in Russian air defenses? Where and when are Russian fighters in the air capable of intercepting a missile? The more precisely you know this, the better you can plan missions," he explained.

Flamingo and Taurus

Gressel told Euronews that while the Taurus is harder to detect on radar and more maneuverable than the Flamingo, the latter "has a much longer range and warhead, so it has a much greater impact on the target."

It was previously announced that Berlin and Kiev will work together to develop industrial production of long-range missiles.

As Euronews notes, it is not known whether the German government was involved in financing the Flamingo cruise missile. In response to the publication's question, a spokesman for the German Defense Ministry said that "for reasons of military security, questions about individual weapons systems or support for individual commercial enterprises cannot be disclosed."
