IAEA Says Explosions And Smoke Near Zaporizhzhya NPP

There is a potential threat to nuclear security.

A team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) detected explosions and smoke from one of the auxiliary facilities near the site of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant on Saturday.

The ZNPP administration told the IAEA that the facility came under drone fire at 9 a.m. Saturday, the IAEA press office reported.

"This was the latest in a series of incidents in recent weeks and months, further highlighting the potential threats to nuclear safety during the military conflict at the ZNPP," the statement said.

The IAEA noted that the auxiliary facility is located 1,200 meters from the ZNPP site.

"Any attack in the vicinity of a nuclear power plant ... poses a potential threat to nuclear safety and must be avoided. I once again call for maximum military restraint near nuclear facilities to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident," IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasized.
