U.S. Senate Committee Approves Record Defense Budget

It also includes money to support Ukraine.

The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved an $852 billion draft U.S. defense budget for the next fiscal year. The document was supported by 26 votes to 3. It aims to modernize the military, increase munitions production, support allies and strengthen the U.S. position in the face of growing threats from China, Russia, Iran and North Korea, writes The Washington Post (translated by Charter97.org).

The initiative's authors - Republican Senators Mitch McConnell and Democratic Senator Chris Coons - note that the budget exceeds what the White House requested and the House approved. It includes restoring aid to Ukraine, strengthening military presence in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, and additional investments in the military industrial base.

One of the priorities will be to expand production of key weapons. The budget allocates $7.3 billion for this.

It also provides $8.7 billion to modernize shipbuilding, including Virginia-class submarines and DDG-51 destroyers.

Special attention is paid to supporting military personnel: a nearly 4 percent pay raise is proposed, improvements to living conditions, including renovations to Marine Corps barracks, and funding for childcare programs for military families.

The budget also includes restoring funding for the Ukraine Security Initiative and other allied support programs. The senators stress: investing in partners enhances collective defense capabilities and reduces risks to Americans themselves.

"Dollars can't buy yesterday," the bill's authors reminded. In their view, if the U.S. wants to be prepared for tomorrow's threats, it needs to act today.
